چکیده

INTRODUCTION I t is well known that elements exist in coal in a variety of different modes of occurrence [1,2]. Such modes can vary from the element being totally dispersed in the macerals (e.g. organic sulfur, carboxyl-bound Ca in lignite) to discrete mineral occurrences (e.g. pyrite, FeS,, quartz, SiO,, etc.). Recently, we showed that X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy is capable of recording spectra from elements present in coal a t concentration levels as low as 5 ppm [31. Such information, obtained directly with a minimum of sample preparation, is proving to be invaluable for the elucidation of a trace element's mode of occurrence. In the previous work, we used XAFS spectroscopy to identify the principal modes of occurrence of arsenic and chromium in various coals. Here, we present more recent XAFS spectroscopic observations on these and other trace elements in coal and take the opportunity to discuss the ramifications of such XAFS studies for geochemical investigation of trace elements in coal.

Geochemistry and origin of elements of Upper Triassic Olang coal deposits in northeastern Iran

The Olang area is a part of Gheshlagh-Olang synclinal, which is a member of eastern Alborz coal basin and is situated at a distance of70 km northeast of Shahroud city. Coal-bearing strata of this region are part of the Shemshak group (Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic).Samples from the 9 coal seams of the Olang coal deposits were collected and ashed. The aim of this study is to determine theoccu...

Distribution of trace elements in coal and coal fly ash and their recovery with mineral processing practices: A review

Today coal is among the most important energy sources. In order to meet the world's energy demands, low-calorie lignite with a high ash content is generally used in the large capacity coal-fired thermal power plants. As a result of coal firing, wastes such as fly ash, slag, and flue gas are also produced. Subsequently, toxic trace elements within coal are transferred to wastes such as slag, fl...

Geochemistry of Elements in the Coal Seams of the Xishanyao Formation from Gashunwusan Mine, Xinjiang, Northwest China

The samples from Xishanyao Formation in Gashunwusan Mine were analysed by inductively coupled plasma massspectrometry (ICP-MS), X-Ray fluorimetry (XRF) and other techniques. Through the use of the above techniques, we researched characteristics and modes of occurrence of the trace elements. According to content and ratios of trace elements, we discussed coalforming environments of the research ...

بررسی عناصر کمیاب و خاکی نادر در حوزه‌های زغالی ایران (در معدن زیر زمینی زغالسنگ کارمزد)

This research presents data on widespread abnormal accumulations of Trace and Rare Earth Elements in many coal deposits worldwide. There have been many studies on the distribution and geochemistry of REEs in coal. ∑REE content in most coals varies from several µg/g to several hundred µg/g, and the REEs are distributed in minerals although some are associated with organic material in coal. In th...

Modes of occurrence of mercury and other trace elements in coals from the warrior field, Black Warrior Basin, Northwestern Alabama

The mineralogic residence and abundance of trace metals is an important environmental issue. Data from the USGS coal quality database show that potentially toxic elements, includingHg, As,Mo, Se, Cu, and Tl are enriched in a subset of coal samples in the BlackWarrior Basin of Alabama, USA. Although the coal as-mined typically is low in these elements, localized enrichments occur in high-pyrite ...
